Zambia Cyber Crime Case sees 22 Chinese jailed

A Zambian court sentenced members of a Chinese cybercrime gang to jail terms up to 11 years, along with fines between $1,500-3,000 each, as part of a massive operation that saw 77 individuals arrested in April.

A number of Zambian nationals recruited to run scam operations via WhatsApp, Telegram and chatrooms for the Chinese firm were among the initial group arrested, but they were released on bail on condition they helped authorities with their investigations.

The online fraud scheme had targeted people across the globe, including Singapore, Peru, and the UAE.
